Hardware and Design

Karbonn A21 comes up with 4.5inch capacitive display with 480×800 screen resolution. There are up and downs as of now as the phone is budget friendly and you don’t expect it to have IPS or Gorilla displays. That’s very standard capacitive display and performs quite well. The phone is powered by 1.2 GHz dual core processor and 512MB RAM. That’s definitely a good move to counter attack upcoming Micromax A110 and A90+. The chipset is believed to be cortex A5 with Adreno 203 GPU. We’ll get you more concrete details on this soon as we get hands on benchmarks.

On the top of the Karbonn A21 lies 3.5mm Audio jack and power/lock-unlock key. There is absolutely nothing at the bottom of the smartphone except tiny microphone. Moving on to the left side of the device, you’ll notice a USB port whereas right side of the device is filled with volume rocker buttons. On the back panel, you’ll have 5MP camera while at the bottom end you’ve the speaker.

Interestingly, this ICS powered smartphones has 4 capacitive buttons at the bottom wherein Android 4.0 ICS is optimized to use only 3 buttons. Karbonn! Did you forget that?

Software

There is nothing great to talk about the software part of the smartphone. However, Karbonn A21 comes up with Android 4.0.4 ICS. There are absolutely no modifications at all to the original Android. Once the device starts up, you’ll definitely notice Galaxy S3 type of live wallpaper running in the background. In-spite having good number of widget on the home screen, the panning experience is really very smooth.

The internet browser that comes with Karbonn A21 is really good and scrolling is more than good enough.

There are the couple of apps that are pre-installed. Below is the full list of additional applications that comes up with Karbonn A21.

  1. Google Currents
  2. Yahoo Messenger
  3. nextGTV
  4. Paytm
  5. Popi
  6. TOI
  7. WeChat
  8. What’s App

Camera

5MP auto-focus camera with LED flash is more than enough to capture good quality pictures. The 1.3MP front facing camera would be useful for video calling. That’s good addition right there! There are the couple of sensors accompanied by camera.

Battery

1800 mAh Li-ion battery is capable of powering your device for one and half day with moderate usage of data connectivity. However, if you’re full-time internet user then it would barely stand for one full day.

Pros

  • 1.2GHz dual core processor
  • Android 4.0.4 on-board
  • Good build quality

Cons

  • No shutter key for the camera

Conclusion

The device is excellent choice if you’re looking for the budget smartphone. There have been very less complaint about the Karbonn smartphones and this forces us to make it 4/5 star device. Thumbs up from our side!

4 / 5 stars

I don't think that's possible. You can't replace the software unless it is available unofficially on some development forums such as forum.xda-developer.com

plz reply any1 coz m lookin frwd to buy it

hey can those pre installed apps be removed?? coz i dnt use them

It is possible to remove pre-installed apps only after rooting.

Hi, I am not able to set up my office email account in A21. I am using IMAP for incoming and SMTP for outgoing email. COnfigured for both the emais and didn't succeed with the connection. It says Unable to connect to the server. Appreciate for your quick help.

You must have entered wrong incoming and outgoing email servers. Double check them.

Hi Pawan, Thanks for your reply. I have mentioned the correct incoming and outgoing server names. For incoming it's IMAP and the server is stbeehive.oracle.com and the port is 993 for outgoing it's SMTP and the server name is same only the change in the port and it's 465. Thank you very much for your help

Great! You're welcome. ;-)

Hi, Its a great mobile i tried some 3d games too great touch sensitivity. But last week my mobile get locked with pattern mismatch and the gmail account recovery is not working. When i reached service center they replied me that they dont have the software for A21 to recover/ reset. Is there any way can i unlock. Thanks in advance. I have the bill and warranty.

IPS panel with qHD display, but no gorilla glass protection. Devices comes with a high quality screen guard fixed on it right out of the box and has another one in the box.

Yes, but the default screen guard provided is so good that you cannot make it out that there is a screen guard present and it is so very scratch resistant. I have been using A21 for 5 days now and not a single scratch was found on the screen and I use it very rough...

anyone know about the internet settings of this phone i have tata docomo connection and activated a gprs pack,,,,,i dont know about any settings....plz help

You don't need to set up it manually. Just restart your smartphone. They will be saved automatically.

Guess what, event with automatic settings it still doesn't register with your service provider's proxy sever! Ironically apps can connect to the internet, even Skype works, but browser and the Play store do not work... EDIT: Can someone double check this?

Really? Well, in my case, internet settings were available automatically.

Don't know what could be the issue on your phone Gaurav.. but on my A21 the internet is working very good. I am using Airtel 3g Coimbatore circle. All of them work... Apps, updates, browser, youtube, google play, hotspot connected devices. Did you try using another service provider internet service??

That's alright! I got it working, the automatic settings the phone was picking were wrong (proxy clash) so I had to call up AirTel and get the manual settings...and wallah...it started working!

The screen pixel density of A100 is not as good as A21 so it will not be as clear and vivid as A21. Also for a 5inch screen the 2000mah battery sucks.... If you want to go for the 5inch screen go for spice mi 500 it has a 2400 mah battery and also a dual core processor... but on the contrary it is a bit costlier than a100 and a21..

i have galaxy fit ... n i want to buy a great specification phone... i like karbonn a21 n A18... which phone should i buy??? n is betterthis phone is better than galaxy fit ??? will it complaint me??? plz suggest...

Hi Tushar... Even I have the Samsung Galaxy Fit..... However that phone does not play HD games so I bought the Karbonn A21 and it is a good phone but I am not very very happy with it.. just satisfied. The A21 plays the HD games like dead creed, baseball superstars 2012, allows hd live wallpapers and great 4.5 inch display. But I should say I am a bit disappointed in the ram and both the FIT and A21 have almost same amount of free space in ram around 150 MB . So even though it is a dual core processor you cannot use that dual core capability as the ram is so less the other features can be handled just fine by any single core 1GHz processor also... so it is better you go for A18 as the Ram provided in that phone is more than that of the A21. Edit: Also forgot to mention the battery is not that good, but better than the FIT. In Galaxy Fit if I turn on 3g and use google maps the battery discharges like in 1 hour at the max. But with this phone I was able to surf for 5 Hours straight with 3G so I should say the battery is 5 times better. But it will not last you one whole day if you use it in the medium to heavy range. It will last 1 day if you use it in the medium range. So as the ratio of Battery : screensize is same in A18 and A21 so A18 battery also should perform almost similarly.
